United Nations observed 9th August as ‘International Day of the World’s Indigenous People’. To mark this day, ENVIS Centre at Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB), Coimbatore organized an event for sharing the traditional knowledge related to Forest Genetic Resources (FGR) of tribal living in forest hamlets. A field visit was arranged on 07.08.2015 for Botany post graduate students of Bharathiar University to Seengapathy, a tribal settlement at Sadivayal near Coimbatore. Dr Kannan C.S. Warrier, Scientist E and Coordinator ENVIS during his welcome speech highlighted the significance of ENVIS to the participants. Situated at the foot of Siruvani Hills of Western Ghats, the area around Sadivayal exhibits a typical moist-deciduous forest type. The event facilitated the students to have a face-to-face interaction with tribal people and created awareness on tribal traditions of FGR conservation. Dr C. Kunhikannan, Head Biodiversity Division of IFGTB functioned as a resource person and detailed the taxonomic characteristics of important Forest Genetic Resources of the area for the benefit of the participants.
